Stories of boys volunteering to join the armed forces below the legal age during the First World War are far from unusual. These tales are, by and large, anecdotal. As the boys claimed to have lied about their age (and often theire name) upon enlistment, there can be no accurate record of how many children fought in the Great War nor how young they really were. Indeed, so frequent are such accounts that one could be forgiven for taking such stories with more than a large pinch of salt
